Happy Halloween Eve!
Who’s as excited as I am for Halloween? Totes everyone!
In my earlier Halloween: Home Edition post I promised I’d share my top 46 Halloween Movies so you’d have some options to choose from. These are all Halloween movies I’ve watched at least twice and generally tend to enjoy around this time of year. They can really put you in the Halloween spirit and I genuinely believe these are a good watch based on many factors like story line, suspense, plot twist, and pure joy (PG movies lol). A couple are based on true events and are well portrayed. If you have any faves of your own, comment or hit me up and tell me all about them. Also I tried to provide good links in case you can’t find any.
Enjoy, Lena xx
This hauntingly graphic original focus on a nightmare driven serial killer. This definitely a must watch if you ask me. Not only is it frighteningly thrilling but my beloved Johnny Depp is part of the cast as well.
Ok so you’re a newlywed couple and you’re ready to begin a happy life, well so you thought. Instead lead actor Ryan Reynolds (total awesome btw), his wife (Melissa George) and daughter (which many did not realize is Chloe Grace Moretz) get terrorized by demons. The storyline is pretty good and thrilling since it’s based around true events. Moral of the story NEVER move into any place that’s been the setting of a horrific crime scene. Yikes!
“Live people ignore the strange and unusual, I myself am strange and unusual.” Well isn’t that the truth! This is the theme of Beetlejuice, strange and unusual…Tim Burton’s specialty along with his ability to keep an audience captivated. This movie is disgustingly satisfying and most of all hella funny.
I remember when I first watched this and thought, “Wow, this is a solid example of what bullying does to people.” Carrie has telekinetic abilities that causes her to unleash a fury like no other on her tormentors. I prefer this older film because I like old movies but if you want the try the newer (2013) one I would still say it’s decent.
“Casper the friendly, the friendliest ghost you’ll know…” Casper is a real classic for my generation lol. He’s sweet and always willing to help even when his 3 mischievous uncles try to deter him. Casper is a nice family movie and the TV series is great for kids.
I have a lot of love for Charlie Brown! It’s one cartoon I will never great tired of during the holidays, regardless of my age. It’s fun, witty and great for all audiences. I hope you guys enjoy this Halloween special.
Stephen King has an act for his horrifically detailed horrors. This old movie is no different. In a strange town where a cult of children are strongly empowered, a young couple thrives to survive. This is a good take on how cults can come in various forms and sizes. This is honestly an adult nightmare and draws on religious indoctrination and fear.
Coraline, voiced over by Dakota Fanning, follows the adventures of a young girl who sets out on a new life in Oregon with her parents. Bored out of her mind she goes looking for excitement and discovers a parallel universe to her current world. It’s mystifying and gives a nice spook for an animation.
“Until death do us part” they say, well boy was Victor (played by Johnny Depp) in for a surprise. This Burton animation follows the tale of a young lad before his nervously awaited wedding. It’s a good and spooky laugh as Victor travels through the underworld to make it back to his soon to be wife…or will he?
There’s nothing like a good shark movie to keep you rattled on Halloween. I replaced Jaws with this on my list because for some reason I’ve always favored this more. I suppose maybe the storyline is better, maybe because I get to watch LL Cool J in his prime, who knows?
Peculiarity is Tim Burton’s specialty and there’s nothing I love more than a movie, especially an old one, where you see raw creativity pushing the limits. Also I love a Johnny Depp and Burton collab; Depp can always match the character’s persona perfectly. Join Burton this Halloween and enjoy an incredible tale of a quite unusual character.
Ok, so this movie was out before my mom even thought of having me but who doesn’t love E.T. It’s been a household name for many years and I still rank it as a family oriented movie packed with adventure. Watch as 3 kids go out of their way to help your friendly neighborhood alien.
The Final Destination franchise got a little monotonous for me after a while but I do believe this first one was decent enough to be on this list. Not much for for a thick plot, as the movie basically revolves around teenagers trying to cheat death. It’s still a gory Halloween flick.
This adorable tale follows a dog and his master. Frankenweenie is a friendlier version to Frankenstein. I don’t want to spoil it with a synopsis of the storyline but the movie is a delight so grab some treats and maybe your furry companion.
“Who are you going to call?!”
This is a comical movie on paranormal activity featuring three university professors who capture all forms of ghost as they wreak havoc across New York City. There’s a 2016 remake to this that totally screams girl power.
This is a classic and popular slasher film. Most Halloween characters are based on this event or this idea. We have our serial killer Michael Myers who was locked away for brutally killing his sister. On Halloween night 1963, he escapes to wreak havoc on the small town of Haddonfield. This def is a def must to start your scare fest
This is a Disney Channel fave of mine! It’s perfect for Halloween and explore a fun and magical world. The story follows three siblings who soon discover their grandma is a witch and that they too have special abilities. Totally awesome, right? This is perfect to binge since its a 3 part sequel, Enjoy! Your inner kid will def thank me later.
Another Disney favorite, I guarantee you’ll have a kick out of this one. This stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy as 3 devious witches. These sisters return after 300 years seeking immortality. It’s quite humorous and full of dramatics. Well done Disney!
I want to drink your blood! *says in a vampy voice* Lol just kidding. This is the friendliest most lovable Dracula you will ever meet. At first he puts up a tough guy front but he’s such a marshmallow with his #1 priority being to protect his daughter. Drac owns a monster resort that’s a away from humans. Operations are running smooth, until one day the resort is discovered by…you guessed it a human. This is a must watch Halloween animation in my books! Find out what happens when Jonathon arrives.
J.K.Rowling stole the hearts of many with her screenplay fantasies. She bring’s a magical world to us, where many have grown up following the lives of Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermoine (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint). Watch as this legendary trio roam the Halls of Hogwart’s figuring out the world of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
As a teen I watched this a few times and I still watch it from time to time. This is another slasher film (it wouldn’t be Halloween if it wasn’t) that was just a tad bit cheesy but I still enjoy watching it. There’s another one made approximately a year after and both starring Jennifer Love Hewitt trying to get off the hook from this bad guy (when you watch it, you’ll understand my oh so cheesy pun).
Jeepers Creepers where’d you get those eyes?!…This monstrous fiend revives its flesh eating ritual every period of 23 years and 23 days. Unfortunately for Darry and Patricia they were around for the creature’s awakening. This is a pretty good horror/thriller flick. I recommend that you binge the sequel but my fave is part 1, though that could change since I am yet to see the newest one released this year.
This is the original horror story of The Bates Motel. Fraudulent Marion Crane gets fed up with life and wants a fresh start, only thing with 40k she embezzled from her boss. She’s on her hot pursuit to her lover when she decided to rest at the motel. Unfortunately for her, karma might be hitting her harder than she expected. Add this to your horror list and enjoy a terrorizing film
A young couple moves into an apartment surround by strange neighbors and even stranger events. Rosemary (played by the lovely Mia Farrow) weirdly becomes pregnant and the couple must figure out the next step. If you like movies like “The Exorcist” you can certainly add this to your list. If you liked this as much as I did, follow up on the mini series (starring Zoe Saldana)
Another favorite from my teen years, Scream focuses on terrorizing of a girl and her friends. Only a year after her mother’s death, Sydney and her friends get some freaky phone calls that soon result in a nightmare. The Scream franchise has been around for a bit and has several sequels.
Silence of the lamb (1991)
This is the story of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, more than like there’s no need for me to introduce this cannibal psychopath. Enjoy as this film sends shocking thrills down your spine. The storyline in this is intoxicating and paved the way for the much enjoyed TV series (well at least I really enjoyed it before it got cancelled).
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Another Tim Burton phenomenon, that is for obvious reasons a favorite of mine. Centered around Ichabod Crane and his investigation of the headless horseman. A story many have grown to know. Sit back, relax and enjoy eerie movie.
Sweeney Todd (2007)
Ok, I know you’re beginning to see a trend here…yet another Tim Burton movie (I love them). If you like both musicals and halloween then this is the story for you! Set in London, this barber and his tenant will keep you in suspense throughout the entire movie. A fabulously done collab with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
The storyline on this is not much in my opinion but it is quite gruesome. 5 friends and a hitch-hiker are hunted by a horrifying freak with a chainsaw lol. That’s basically the bottom line of the movie, another slasher movie
The Adams Family (1993)
This is a comical horror with various renditions. A Gothic family with many tales but I particularly like this storyline. There’s a new addition to the family that causes tension and a new love interest. Watch it this Halloween night and have a good laugh.
This follows the adventures of Ed and Lorraine, two paranormal investigators. They’re latest investigation sends them to a farmhouse to help a family being terrorized by dark paranormal forces. It’s a pretty decent horror and suitable for this occasion. The movie’s plot made it a crowd pleaser the year it was released and resulted in a second sequel.
I watch this from time to time. If you like magic and girl power this totally embodies it. The movie stars four girls who are outcast. Only having each other, they form a powerful bond that helps them through all of their difficulties. All goes well until there’s a shift in the balance and some forces and bonds become too powerful and reckless.
A set of female friends span out driven by adrenaline set out on an adventure that could be their last. Watch as the group’s endurance and survival skills are tested during their cave expedition. No light, no cell signal, no anything…Just them and the creatures of the dark.
The name alone speaks for what to expect in this film as possession and demons are the centerfold of this movie. Watch as two priest try to save a young girl in this movie of good vs evil. There or different versions to this film and others based on true events like “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and there is TV spin off.
This is set in Tokyo and surrounds a supernatural spirit seeking revenge for a wrong that was done many years ago. You will see a trail of horrific deaths as the spirit curses one victim after another
There’s not much to say other than try to live in an area where you can’t be stalked and hunted by psychotic people who’ve spent too much time away from civilization. This is a remake of the 1977 film and has a second part.
This is not typically advertised as a Halloween movie but i found it fitting. These teens lived a nightmare and fought til the very end. It’s a good watch especially if you’re not seeking a typical Halloween movie.
Tim Burton found a creative way to merge both Christmas and Halloween and made it A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I’ve watched this film from when I was little and to this day still watch it almost every year during the holidays. Thank you Tim Burton for giving me countless movies to look forward to on Halloween and now Christmas.
Another brilliant movie with Johnny Depp, who plays the role of a rare book dealer seeking copies of a demon text. This is not an action packed movie where Depp heroically battles demons but it is mystifying and the atmosphere draws you in. I truly believe this is underrated but its popularity has significantly grown as people have taken the time to understand the film and appreciate the art.
Much like “The Exorcist” this is another old film featuring demons and possession. It is hauntingly well plotted and a MUST see for your Halloween night. If you enjoy it and are not to scared to watch another there are sequels.
A child is possessed by an ancient spirit and her father and mother fight hard to help her break the curse. You can add this to your set of possession movies
A young journalist seeks answers revolving a tape that takes the lives of all those who watch it. The suspense of the movie is good and the demon is daunting. Will the investigator survive watch and you’ll find out. If you care to watch another this has a sequel, “The Ring Two”
Jack Nicholson, playing Jack, is a raging lunatic in this movie and brilliant at best. Jack is a writer and Jack is a writer seeking peace and quiet to document his next piece and takes the job of a hotel caretaker in a mountain side. His wife and child goes with him and so the mayhem begins.
A group of scientist working in Antartic discover a neighboring camp where all of the members are dead. To their surprise, what’s hunting them is living among them. Watch as John Carpenter’s The Thing leaves you shattering in suspense.
This movie present four stories intertwined into one Halloween occurence. Watch as the story unfolds and you can decide if you’re going to open your doors to trick r treaters this Halloween.
Not one but two witches, who are not just siblings but twins. How cool is that? Veryyy! I just love Disney and this was a cute Halloween movie I use to have on repeat. This overly dramatic comedy stars Tia and Tamera Mowry on a quest to reunite with their magical world. Watch and channel your inner child and if you enjoy there’s a “Twitches Too”.
